Be honest with yourself.

“Instead, we will lovingly follow the truth at all times—speaking truly, dealing truly, living truly—and so become more and more in every way like Christ who is the Head of his body, the Church…” Ephesians 4:15a, The Living Bible (TLB).

When we experience hurt, many of us either go into attack-mode, or we suffer in silence while resentment festers. However, there is a way for God to be glorified in the midst of it all. The solution is in being honest with yourself and in knowing your truth.

For example, a hair stylist does Susan’s hair, and after the stylist is finished, she asks her to take a look in the mirror. It doesn’t take long for Susan to realize that she doesn’t like the hairstyle at all. She feels frustrated because she has an engagement to attend and doesn’t have time to go to another stylist.

How does she respond in a way that will glorify God and keep her example as a true believer intact? She responds with the truth, by saying, “You know, I thank you for styling my hair, but this is not what I expected. I have an event to attend in a few hours, and I don’t have time to go anywhere else. Can anything be done?” Susan’s words are her truth spoken in love. If she weren’t honest with herself, she wouldn’t have been able to be honest with her stylist.

Choosing to hold back the truth and our honest feelings will undoubtedly cause resentment and bring impurities into our heart. If having a pure heart is your goal, you must seek to be honest with yourself, so you can communicate your true feelings with others.

Prayer: Father God, I thank You for speaking directly to my heart and my situation. You are faithful. I repent for lying to myself. I ask Your forgiveness, and I need Your help. Help me to be honest with myself, so that I can be honest with others. Give me a pure and clean heart and help me to be a true example of Your love. In Jesus name, Amen.
