Resting in the Storm

“And He said to them, Why are you timid and afraid, O you of little faith? Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great and wonderful calm (a perfect peaceableness)” Matthew 8:26, Amplified Classic

In Matthew 8, Jesus is asleep in the boat, while the disciples are facing a raging storm on the Sea of Galilee. The disciples look at Jesus resting peacefully and can’t understand how He could sleep while they face such a storm. Then they wake Him and ask Him to save them. Aren’t we so much like that? We face a storm in our life and we pray for God to save us. We ask Him to make the difficult circumstances go away. We want Him to fix our problems, but what if He really wants to fix our hearts?

In the boat, on the stormy sea, As Jesus was quiet but present, the disciples were still being taught by Him and their faith was being stretched. When they woke Him, what was it that He said to them? He asked them why they were afraid and why it was that they had so little faith? Think about it. They had seen Jesus do countless miracles. After all they had seen, why did they still doubt His sovereignty? After all that WE have seen, why do WE still doubt Him? Why are we so afraid? Where is our faith?

Instead of resting in Him, our focus is on the storm all around us. We are busy making our own plans to solve our problems our own way. We continue to call out to Him to save us, but we can’t take our hearts, minds, and hands off of our situations.

After the disciples woke Jesus, He rebuked the wind and the waves and calmed the sea. That’s what we want God to do, right? But what if God’s greatest desire is for us to just rest in Him? Let’s ask God to change our hearts and help us to trust Him no matter what we face.

Father, You know me so well. No one knows my heart and can see into the depths of me like You. Forgive me for trying to find ways to fix things on my own. I don’t want to do that anymore. Help me rest in YOU while I wait. I submit to You. My hope and expectation are from You and You alone. Thank You LORD. You are such a good Father! In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.

“Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.” Psalm 62:5

  1. Amen! For the word of God. Father help us to always put our trust in you and not try to do things on our own, because when we do it on our own, we tend to mess things up, because it wasn’t the will of God for us to try to fix the mess when he had other plans for us . Give us wisdom to not fear, and to pray, believe, and wait on you. Thank you Lord…❤🤗

  6. Awesome message! This is the reason Jesus died on the cross so that we could free in Him. He paid the price so we could have access to our Father and could rest in His love. Only through real faith in His ability to take care of us, can this be achieved. How absolutely wonderful He is!! Praise His holy name!!
