The Hidden Person of the Heart

“But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart” 1 Samuel 16:7, ESV.

Jesus was unsuspecting. He didn’t draw attention to Himself. You wouldn’t have thought Him to be the King of kings if you would have seen Him on the streets. He looked like an ordinary man when all the while He was the savior of the world. David was also unsuspecting. He didn’t look like a mighty warrior. He didn’t look like he could slay a giant at all. When the prophet came to anoint the next king of Israel and Jesse brought out his strong sons, Samuel asked, “Is this all?” Jesse answered him, we have one who keeps the sheep. When David entered the house, God told Samuel, that’s him. He didn’t look like a king, but he loved the Lord with all his heart.

Women spend so much time and money on their outward appearance when God is more concerned about the hidden person of the heart. He has chosen you and it has nothing to do with you. He’s looking at your heart. The Bible says, He has chosen the weak things to confound the mighty. The foolish things to confound the wise (see 1 Corinthians 1:27). While everyone else is focusing on the outward, focus on the inward. Focus on letting God get your heart and mind right. Hide His Word in your heart and look for ways to apply it’s principles to your life. Let Him build in you godly character. Doing this will take you farther in life than you can ever hope or imagine!

“Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear—but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious” 1 Peter 3:3-4, ESV

Prayer: Father God, I thank you for your wisdom and your grace. You are beautiful. Help me value the same things you value. You’re looking into my heart. Help me to focus more on the condition of my heart. Make my heart beautiful. Make my faith strong. Make my love walk beautiful. Transform me Lord until I look like Jesus on the inside and behave like Him on the outside. Help me spend my time, money and energy on what matters most to you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
