“God places the lonely in families…” Psalms 68:6, New Living Translation.
I once read an article about an older woman who released an ad asking for a family to adopt her as a grandma for the holidays. She had been estranged from her daughter and grandchild for years and didn’t want to spend another Christmas alone. So she created an ad. All she wanted to do was love on some children, give them toys and feed them. When she received negative responses from the ad, she took it down. But someone had saved her ad and went on a search to find her and give her the family she had been longing for. She was overwhelmed with joy.
All some of us want this time of year is someone to love. The Bible talks about how the love of God has been shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who has been given to us (see Romans 5:5). This means our spiritual capacity to love is filled up completely, and we have a great need to pour His love out on someone. But what if we don’t have a spouse, a family, or a friend to pour all of this love on? The Lord says He sets the lonely in families. My sister, the Lord will put people in your path who need the love you have to give. Pour out and show His love without looking for anything in return. Be like a tree planted by the rivers of water (see Psalm 1:3). Let people enjoy the fruit of God’s rich love in you, but you get all you need from the warm sun above and the strengthening earth below.
Prayer: Father, you are a good and loving Father, and you have filled me to the overflow with your love. I pray that you put people in my path today who need the love you have given me to show. Help me follow your leading and be sensitive to the needs of those around me. And when I’ve shown your love to someone, help me look to you for the constant love and nourishment I need. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
I am that woman…alone but not alone, because I have my mom and dad, sister and her family. Plus God gave me a vision of when I’ll meet him and so I’m resting in that, knowing it’s not my fight and I already have the victory.
Last night in the grocery store I struck up a conversation with a stranger and shared a common interest then ended it with “Jesus is good!” Lol, it’s not what I usually say and I didn’t plan that, it just came flying right out of my mouth. I hope that man heard the Holy Spirit speaking to him.
Later today I’ll go to parents house and share His love, my love with them, knowing that He cares for me better than anyone else can.
Thank you for this devotional for those of us who are alone today. May we look to Him because He cares for us!
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you! I needed this! God is good and faithful!
Thanks for sharing.
We especially needed reform today!!!
Dear Father, please help me operate from a place of love even when I feel offended. Allow me to shed the same forgiveness as You gave countless times with me. Let us give love not only on Christmas Day but also everyday. ✝️♥️
I can speak from experience that this verse is a promise from God. After experiencing a divorce that I didn’t want, and not having any children – I was in a season of life that could have made me feel abandoned and alone. Yet God led me to a church where a family learned about my situation. They invited me into their home to get better acquainted. As time passed, I was grafted into that family, which has continued for 24 years. The parents are two of my best friends and their children (who are now adults) still refer to me as their Aunt. It is obvious the Holy Spirit prompted this family to “adopt” me and I am blessed because these relationships go beyond the natural bloodline of a family.
Their example taught me to open my home to college students who were away from family during the Holidays.
I hope these two examples encourage the readers of this devotional to have faith for God to do the same for them.
