Give some love away today!

“God places the lonely in families…” Psalms 68:6, New Living Translation.

I once read an article about an older woman who released an ad asking for a family to adopt her as a grandma for the holidays. She had been estranged from her daughter and grandchild for years and didn’t want to spend another Christmas alone. So she created an ad. All she wanted to do was love on some children, give them toys and feed them. When she received negative responses from the ad, she took it down. But someone had saved her ad and went on a search to find her and give her the family she had been longing for. She was overwhelmed with joy.

All some of us want this time of year is someone to love. The Bible talks about how the love of God has been shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who has been given to us (see Romans 5:5). This means our spiritual capacity to love is filled up completely, and we have a great need to pour His love out on someone. But what if we don’t have a spouse, a family, or a friend to pour all of this love on? The Lord says He sets the lonely in families. My sister, the Lord will put people in your path who need the love you have to give. Pour out and show His love without looking for anything in return. Be like a tree planted by the rivers of water (see Psalm 1:3). Let people enjoy the fruit of God’s rich love in you, but you get all you need from the warm sun above and the refreshing and reviving water and earth below.

Prayer: Father, you are a good and loving Father, and you have filled me to the overflow with your love. I pray that you put people in my path today who need the love you have given me to show. Help me follow your leading and be sensitive to the needs of those around me. And when I’ve shown your love to someone, help me look to you for the constant love and nourishment I need. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
