“Dear friends, donβt be surprised when the fiery ordeal comes among you to test you, as if something unusual were happening to you. Instead, rejoice as you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may also rejoice with great joy when his glory is revealed.” 1 Peter 4:11-13
Heat and intense pressure reveals what is real and what is not. If God allows you to go through the fire, He wants to reveal that you are a real daughter of God, and your hope in Him is not pretend. Go through the fire and then share the hope you have in the Lord with those who are now ready to hear it.
Prayer: Father, whatever you allow me to walk through, I trust you will be glorified in the end. I know who I am. I am your daughter. Let the fire prove the quality of my faith. Let the pressure prove my spirit has been reborn and I have been truly changed. This is not pretend. Your Spirit within me is real. Allow whatever you think is best to show the world that I am truly yours. Then ready me, Father, to share with others the truth of the gospel. I love you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

First, let me say that I am eternally grateful for the DOTK ministry, Kesha Trippett, these daily devotionals, and all who serve in this ministry. It has truly helped me through some extremely dark times in my life.
God often speaks to me through these devotionals, some more than others, but He knows what I need. As I was reading today’s devotional, this is what God gave me as I was reading: Heat and intense pressure also creates diamonds. π OK, that was warm and fuzzy, but it did not stop there. I can be somewhat dismissive and I tried. I am a crazy amount of stubborn. I turned my hearing off at “diamonds” to finish reading the devotional and was again stopped. “…in the rough.” I had no choice but to stop right there and reflect. And Google. I Google everything. In the Google search bar, I entered “diamond in the rough.” I knew I had heard this expression before and had my theory as to what it meant but I needed a refresher, just in case I missed something. Google’s description:
“Diamond in the rough” is an idiom that describes someone or something with considerable potential and valuable qualities, but who is not yet polished or refined. It suggests that they are unrefined on the surface but possess inherent worth that can be brought out with time and development.
Hmm. If heat and intense pressure creates diamonds, outside of which is a rough landscape, i. e. trial by fire, a crashing economy, bills, inflation, sickness, terminal illnesses, and the list goes on, then that means this is a cycle. Our trial by fire, as rough as it may be, is only temporary. And we are in fact diamonds or at least, diamonds being formed. We can and do withstand our trials, if nothing else because we have no other choice. Our trials and tribulations are the rough terrain and we are the diamonds created over time by this heat and intense pressure. I wish I could draw a circle here but since I can’t, I will list the cycle that came to mind. God definitely taught me something thru today’s devotional, so thank you to whoever wrote it! God absolutely works thru DOTK and I have been reading these devotionals for nearly a decade.
1. The “rough” landscape = trial by fire (all of our worries and concerns) –>
2. Diamonds = us in our walk with Jesus. Once we endure the refiner’s fire for so long, we transform, grow, and learn. Diamonds take an immense amount of time to form in the natural world, just as it takes time for us to navigate and find a realistic, morally sound solution to our problems.
3. Diamonds sparkle, and the sun reflects off of them. We should be that light to others so that they will want what we have, Jesus Christ.
4. Just because we are diamonds, or diamonds in the making, does not mean we are exempt from more trials and tribulations. Remember though that is just the barren landscape and landscapes change fairly often. They are temporary. Intense heat and pressure (trials and tribulations) creates diamonds over time. The rough landscape = trial by fire…and the cycle repeats.
My lesson?
Dear Heather (me),
Do not get stuck or hyperfocused on your problems and nothing else. Be aware of them but do not overlook your blessings and the joys in life because of a temporary situation. You might be in a rough landscape right now but remember, you are the diamond currently being created by God. (I am a work in progress.) You will not be moved because the landscape that surrounds you is NOT part of the diamond. Diamonds take hundreds, even thousands of years to change, and landscapes can be changed by a strong wind. You are not attached to your landscape. Your trials and tribulations do not define you because you have a no-strings-attached relationship with them. You know who you are, along with whose you are and if God can create diamonds in the rough, both literal, beautiful diamonds in nature and us as His flock, then why would you think that your current situation is permanent? Even if you see no way out, God always provides a way out, through, or around. Diamonds are not meant to remain in the dirt. Once they are mined, they are usually set into stunning jewelry and crowns. They are not meant to remain in the dirt and neither are you. Step out of this depression, Heather! Keep your hands on the plow and your heart and mind on Jesus. You are beginning to shine. I can see the sparkle. That diamond, albeit slowly, is in fact being created. This too shall pass. β‘
May God bless you ALL today and always!!
Heather- What an enlightening review of this devotion. You have a gift. You are a very good writer. I have prayed for your depression to lift because you are one of HIS gems. πππππ
