A friend is a mirror.

“Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful” Proverbs 27:6

One of the hardest things in life can be telling someone the truth. We ask ourselves, what if they become angry? What if they choose not to be my friend anymore? What if they say I should mind my own business? Several of these questions enter our minds when there’s a need to confront someone we care about. It’s not an easy task at all and can fill many of us with anxiety.

The Bible tells us, “Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.” A real friend will tell you when your breath stinks, when you have something in your nose, when you are headed down a wrong path, when your dress looks too tight, or when you have lipstick on your teeth. They will caution you when you’re about to marry the wrong guy, when you’re gaining too much weight, and when you need to simply slow down and enjoy your life. They are our mirrors. Some people don’t have any close friendships because they are afraid of the truth. However, the beautiful thing about friendships is not only do they reveal areas we need to improve in, but also areas we are incredibly strong in. Like a mirror, a real friend doesn’t lie.

It’s a blessing when you have a friend that knows you so well, and knows how to be truthful, gentle and encouraging. If you have a friend like this, treasure them and never take them for granted.

Challenge: Examine your heart to see if you’ve been truthful with the friends in your life. Ask the Lord how and when He wants you to say what He’s placed on your heart to say. Speak it in love and leave the rest to the Lord.

Prayer: Father God, I thank you for the friends you have strategically placed in my life. I’m so grateful for them. Help me operate in your wisdom and grace. Help me not to be condemning or judgemental, but loving and gentle when it comes time to speak into their life. Just as you’re helping me, help those in my life to be all that you created them to be. I love them Lord, but you love them more. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
