Take Courage!

“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

Tribulation is defined as a pressing, pressing together, pressure. It also means to crowd. In other places in the New Testament, you’ll find other words used such as afflictions, afflicted, trouble, anguish, burdened and persecutions. All of these words mean the same thing—tribulation. In our day, it simply means we’re “going through” in varying degrees. Have you ever asked someone how they’re doing? If they’re honest they may say, “Girl, I’m going through. So much is happening in my life. I’m going through on my job. I’m going through in my marriage. I’m going through with my teenagers and in my finances.” When we hear this we know exactly what they mean, because every single one of us are going through something! But I believe the thing God wants us to focus on is even though we all are going through, our position should be to be of good cheer.

What is good cheer? Is it when you’re happy all of the time, and cheerful with a smile on your face? No, not necessarily. The word cheer in this text simply means to have courage. Where else do we see Jesus saying “be of good cheer”? We find Him telling the man sick of the palsy and lying in his bed, “Be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven”. Then He told him to take up his bed and walk (see Matthew 9:2). We also find Him telling the disciples when He came walking on the sea during a storm, “Be of good cheer, it is I, be not afraid” (see Matthew 14:27). Another instance was while comforting the apostle Paul. It says the Lord stood by Him and said, “Be of good cheer, Paul” (see Mark 6:50).

Focusing on what you’re going through can make you not want to do anything pertaining to God. You’ll stop wanting to read your Bible, pray or go to church. I’ve been there. Instead, let’s take courage! Don’t stop doing all of the things you know you need to be doing as a believer. Don’t put down your sword and don’t lay down your shield. Jesus has overcome the world! You will overcome too!

Prayer: Father God, I receive your words in my heart. Help me understand this truth more deeply. Help me Lord to take courage. Help me not to lay down my sword or my shield. Help me Lord to focus not on what I’m going through, but the truth of your word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  1. Really needed to read this. I’m going through the loss of a 17 week baby. I’ve been in good courage and I keep thinking I shouldn’t be. I think everything happens for our good, we just don’t know the reason. I spent a few days grieving in between getting the news and then being induced. I’m still sad about it but I won’t let it rule my life like Satan wants. I have four beautiful healthy children who still need me to be of good cheer. Thank you!

  2. Blessed morning!!!!!! As I continue to “go through” the grieving over the loss of my mama, I pray for the courage that is needed on a daily basis. I do not want to behave in a way in which Satan will be happy, but more in a way in which God will be pleased. My mama is in a better, more peaceful place now. My plan was to spend Mother’s Day in bed all day in darkness, but I prayed that the Lord would change my mindset. And He did. Thank you, Lord. You did that!

  3. Thank Father, I hear you! I was taking off my armor last night…I’m exhausted, bruised, and hopeless. I have put my aemor back on and i ready to with the courage of the Holy Spirit. Through God all things are possible! Amen!

  4. Thank you Father,
For your courage, your loving kindness and tender mercies.
Lord thank you , for instilling your word in me to be of good cheer in spite what I’m faced with or the circumstances. I’m not alone. Father all praises, honor and glory belongs to you.

  5. God has been revealing this to me so much lately – how I focus on the problem and not Him. If we could just remember that He wants good things for us, even when we can’t see it. He has a plan. He wants to bless us. If we could focus on Ps 139:5 “You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.” Amen, sisters. He love you and I and He wants us to trust Him and know that He has nothing but love for us!

  6. Thank you for the word on this day it was what I needed to continue pressing, no matter what it looks like I still need to be of good courage and keep my focus on my Father. I will marinated on this throughout the day.

  7. O bless you sweet sisters Dawn and Keshia. Indeed shame is when we shut out the light of life from our lives. It also takes grace to have the courage to press on or “go through” in this life. We shall strive on and with God on our side, we shall be victorious. Amen.

  8. Thanks for planting seeds! I needed to read this message. The more the Lord blesses me, the more the enemy comes to reek havic in my life. But, the Lord told me to keep my eyes stayed on Him. We walk by faith and not by sight. And your message reminded me, while keeping my eyes stayed on the Lord, I should be of good courage. ⛪
