Check Your Oil

“Do this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed.” Romans 13:11

You know that little light in your car that tells you it’s time to check your oil? If you are like me, you let out a little sigh of disgust for the interruption in your day. That light is important, though, as it reminds us it’s time to check our oil.

Jesus spoke in many different parables to convey the messages He poured into His peoples’ hearts. One concerned ten bridesmaids who took their lamps to meet the bridegroom, five of which were wise, and five were foolish. The foolish five did not take enough oil for their lamps, while the wise brought extra. While waiting for the bridegroom, they feel asleep, though shortly became startled when they saw the bridegroom arriving. The women busily scurried to light their lamps. The wise women instructed the foolish ones to go and buy some more oil, and as they did the bridegroom came already, and the wise women left with him for the marriage feast, behind a locked door. When the foolish women returned they cried, “Lord, open the door!” But he replied, “I don’t know you” (see Matthew chapter 25).

The bridegroom is Jesus Christ, and the oil represents that of our spiritual readiness for His return. Jesus said He will come like a thief in the night, (see Revelation 3:3) so sister, we must be prepared! What does being prepared for Jesus look like? It means we take careful consideration of how we are living our lives as bridesmaids awaiting the arrival of our bridegroom.

This means walking away from that tempting relationship which may lead you to sin. Giving up that life of sinful habits. Removing yourself from the situation that means living dishonestly. Staying away from that group of friends that leads you down the wrong path. Having your oil on hand, ready to light your lamp, when the arrival of your bridegroom has come.

Let me assure you my dear sister, nothing, and I do mean nothing is worth the separation from your Savior. There is no man, no sin, no drug, no temptation, nothing worth your soul. The time has come and we are called to be prepared for our bridegroom. Let us not be found asleep and without oil for our lamps. We are bold, daughters of Christ, and it’s time we shine our lamps brightly and be ready for the return of our loving Savior.

Prayer: Jesus, I ask that you awaken my soul this very day and ignite my fire for you. Help me to not grow lazy awaiting your arrival. I desire to be ready for You, Jesus. Strengthen me and give me the wisdom to flee from every temptation around me. Nothing is worth leaving You, Lord. In Jesus name, Amen.

  1. I needed this. So many people family friends have been warning me of Christ’s second coming and I ignore them I can’t ignore this is spoke to me so clearly. I thank you x

    1. If Jesus is our Savior, which means we are saved, how can we lose our soul? So, if we commit a sin ( which we ALL do because NOBODY is living flawlessly), and Jesus returns your devotional suggests we can “lose our soul” but that is not scriptural. No true child of God can be separated or plucked out of the Savior’ s hand. It is impossible for a Saint to lose their soul or salvation.

  2. You CANNOT lose your soul (“salvation”) those who did not have oil, did not have salvation in the first place.

  3. Yes holy Father who is most faithful and full of love you do not want to lose one precious soul please brighten my latern keep my heart burning for you in Jesus name I pray

  4. Jesus, continue to fill my lamp with oil; put me in the state of readiness as I await your coming. I refused to be left behind God, please guide in every area of my life; take control of my soul, body & mind it belongs to you, make all I seek to do be acceptable in your sight. God you’re mine & I’m yours and you in me, by now you expect of me to do your will and your will only. Lead me not into temptation & help me to resist sin and that which’s not pleasing in your sight, in Jesus Name, Amen 🙏
