Dim Lights

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” Matthew 5:16, NIV.

I enjoy dim light settings in my home, and will sit and drink my tea and listen to my favorite soft music…until…my husband, whom I love, will come into a room like that and turn on the bright lights. I call them “investigation lights”. It makes me feel like I’m about to be asked, “Where were you at 9pm yesterday evening!” It’s too much light for me and so I’ll tell him, “Oh, that’s too bright!”

Likewise, we can sit and enjoy the dim light setting in our lives, to where we’re not all the way in the darkness of this world, doing all of things “sinners” do, but we’re not all bold and bright for Jesus either. We’re not on fire about anything. We’re like dim lights in a dark world that desperately need Jesus. God wants us to be hot and on fire—doing good and being good. He wants us full of His love and His grace. Full of His Spirit and His wisdom. God wants us to be a city on a hill, a light that stands out and is noticed. He wants us to have the effect that my husband had on me, and cause others to no longer be comfortable in their sin, but made free by the truth of His Word.

Coming close to God is not just coming close to Him in prayer. It’s also coming close to His Word. It’s drawing near by opening our Bibles and learning what He has to say about everything. His truth is the light that we need to help us and others be free!

Prayer: Father God, I thank you for speaking to my heart. Turn the light on in my life as I open my Bible today. Let me shine bright for you. Set me free by your truth and equip me to help set others free. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
