Growth is first downward.

“Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.” John 12:24

Consider the mighty oak tree. Though it reaches 60 to 100 ft in the sky and has branches that spread 150 ft across, hidden beneath the earth’s surface is a complex root system that’s deep and wide.

I remember a time when I asked God why I wasn’t growing. To me, growth meant you’re going higher and soaring in the things of God. He spoke to my spirit, “You are growing, My daughter. You’re growing downward.”

My sister, you may not see any progress in your life, but God does. He sees your roots wrapping around Him and aligning with Him. He sees you looking for ways to apply His Word and deepen your knowledge and understanding of Him. God sees this wonderful process taking place in your heart long before you see anything above the surface.

Keep growing downward. Soon you will break through the hard earth and reach high and stretch wide to help others. Don’t be concerned with how high you go. Focus on how deep you are going in your understanding of the Lord, who promises to exalt you in due time.

Prayer: Thank you, Father, for the growth and the progress that is taking place in my heart and mind. I want to flourish like the palm tree and live a visibly fruitful and blessed life, but right now, you want my roots to deepen in you and your word. Yes, Father, I choose to grow downward and trust you with the rest. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
