Lord, help me not sin with my lips.

“Life and death are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Proverbs 18:21

Years ago, I remember when my husband shared with me the word for the year. He called our family into the living room and said the Lord had given him a word that it would be a year of abundance. I received that word in my heart with joy. However, some months later, situations were coming at us left and right that made it feel like everything but a year of abundance. In my anguish, I said out of my mouth, “This is a year of abundance alright; yeah, an abundance of stress!!!” As soon as those words left my mouth, things began to get worse for us. When Holy Spirit brought this to my attention, I immediately canceled those words and repented to God.

The Bible talks about how God allowed Job to lose his health, his wealth, and his children, but He pointed out how Job never once sinned with his lips. He felt pain from the boils on his skin. He felt unbearable grief from his loss. He felt deeply depressed, and his friends were of no help at all. But he never once released any words out of his mouth that attacked God’s character or made Him appear a liar.

My sister, I know the temptation is real to say some things out of hurt and anger, but we are going to breathe and resolve within ourselves to not sin with our words. How will we do this? We’re going to watch what we’re dwelling on all throughout today. Every negative word begins as a thought, but God will help us. You and I both know the blessings of trusting God, so we will trust Him to be faithful to His Word. He will do what He’s promised us in His perfect timing and in His perfect way.

Prayer: Father God, forgive me for any thoughts I’ve meditated on and any words I’ve released from my mouth that are contrary to your Word. I take those thoughts captive and I cancel those words right now in the name of Jesus. Father, you are true, and you are faithful. Help me trust you to do what you’ve promised. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

“But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.” Job 2:10

(Read Mark 4:18-20)
