Live responsive to Him

“But I say, walk habitually in the [Holy] Spirit [seek Him and be responsive to His guidance], and then you will certainly not carry out the desire of the sinful nature [which responds impulsively without regard for God and His precepts]” Galatians 5:16, Amplified.

I asked God, “What does it mean to walk in the Spirit?” Then while writing this devotional, my newborn son began to cry. No matter how much I wanted to explain to him that finishing this devotional was important to me, eating and falling asleep in my arms was important to him. And because he matters more to me than anything I have going on, I stopped what I was doing to respond to him.

In that moment, the Holy Spirit said, “That’s it! That’s what it means to walk in the Spirit.” By the way, God will always answer your sincere questions about His Word. You just have to expect Him to.

Walking in the Spirit means that we are as attentive to the Holy Spirit as we are to a newborn baby. It means we stop whatever we are doing to respond to what God wants. Nothing else matters.

I challenge you to live responsive to the Spirit of God. Don’t ignore Him. Practice responding to what He wants you to do. The more you develop the habit of responding in obedience to God and His Word, the stronger you’ll be. Your flesh won’t have a chance!

Prayer: Yes Lord. I receive your word. Thank you for giving me understanding of what it means to walk in the Spirit. Help me to be more responsive to you. Help me to obey your word. You are more important than anything I have going on in my life. I submit to you now. Guide me by your Spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  3. I sinned with a man who was not my husband back in 1990. We both were divorced and I was just crazy about him. But Hoky Ghost conviction finally drew me away from this man. But I haven’t been able to get back the close walk I had with God since. I’m lonely for His return of the Holy Ghost. I don’t know what to do.

    1. Ive been there sis. I want to encourage you to not allow satan to guilt you out. We all fall short of the mark. Continue to strive to seek out Godโ€™s will for your life. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. God is faithful. God bless you my sister. Be well in Christ.

  4. November 16 – Those Who Accept the Invitation

โ€œโ€˜You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sightโ€™โ€ (Matthew 11:25โ€“26).

An infant is completely dependent on others for everything he or she needs. A baby has no resources of its own to draw upon for help. The same Greek word (for โ€œinfantsโ€) is used of those who canโ€™t eat solid food (1 Cor. 3:1; Heb. 5:13). It is also used of those who canโ€™t speak (1 Cor. 13:11) and of those who are helpless (Eph. 4:14).

To such spiritual babes, those who realize they are utterly unable to save themselves, God wants to reveal the truths of His kingdom. As seen in the Sermon on the Mount, the โ€œpoor in spiritโ€ who humbly confess their dependency on the Father and the Son receive a clear and irrevocable invitation to salvation.

Infants mentioned here are precisely the opposite kind of persons from the proud Jewish leaders who opposed Jesus at every turn. They are also the antitheses of supposed ideal practitioners of religion who glory in their own self-worth and success.

God is totally satisfied to offer a gospel of grace because that glorifies Him. โ€œFor thus says the high and exalted One who lives forever, whose name is Holy, โ€˜I dwell on a high and holy place, and also with the contrite and lowly of spirit in order to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contriteโ€™โ€ (Isa. 57:15).

    Ask Yourself

Would you say youโ€™ve maintained this same spirit of contrition and trust since youโ€™ve entered into saving relationship with Jesus Christ? What tempts us to claim more confidence in our own identity and our perceived deservedness?
