No More Stinking Thinking

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things” Philippians 4:8, NIV.

Some have a drinking problem. Some have a smoking problem. Some have an eating problem. Some have a porn problem. Me? I have a thinking problem. I can resist the temptation to go purchase and consume liquor. I can ignore a popup ad on the internet to watch porn. I can say no to eating the whole German chocolate cake. But when the enemy presents a negative and toxic thought to my mind, I have to, on purpose, say, “No, I’m not thinking on that! No, I cast that imagination down in Jesus’ name. No! I bring that thought captive in the obedience of Christ (see 2 Corinthians 10:5)!” If I don’t, my beautiful and blessed mind gets all preoccupied with all the wrong stuff. The only solution I have found is to change my thinking.

God teaches us that we can train our minds to think on the right things. In Philippians 4:8, we find all of the good stuff we are to fill our minds with: thoughts that are true, noble and right, pure, lovely, of good report. Then He says if there is any virtue and if there is any praise, think on these things. That sounds very easy, but it takes a lot of effort for an introvert like me, with an active mind and a vivid imagination.

But aren’t you glad that God didn’t leave us alone? He gave us His Holy Spirit to help us. With our willing hearts, He can help us train our minds to believe the best rather than assume the worst. With His help, we can think on positive things rather than negative things. We can let peace guard our hearts and minds through Jesus. We can choose to spend quality time in prayer, praise, and meditating on God’s promises, which is the breeding ground for a disciplined and well-trained mind.

Prayer: Father, I love you. Thank you for loving me. I need your help with my stinking thinking. Renew my mind, Father. Help me to fill my mind with the right things that glorify you. I submit to you and resist every lie from the enemy. I receive your wisdom and your grace to walk this out in my daily life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  1. This is true. I do have an eating problem, but I am able to resist. When it comes to my stinking thinking though I am my worse enemy. I have such a negative outlook on myself and I can’t help but think on those. I know that is a lie from the enemy and he does not want me to succeed. I have to remember I am a child of God and He makes everything beautiful. I have to get to the reality that I need to focus on the good. I am reminded of a post I seen. It tells me that you are living what you prayed for. Strongholds and Mind Thinking are the worse for me. I am in my head way to much. I love this devotional. Thank you :).

    God wants us to put Him first in your thinking and in your life, if we make a conscious effort to live Philippians 4:8-9 NIV Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think on such things. 9) Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
    Do you need peace? Put theses Scriptures in your life.

Yesterday I was in a battle for my mind which usually happens when I first wake up and some days it gets the best of me but yesterday through the spirit I prayed Lord you are good you are pure you are lovely. He is worthy to be praised he is worthy to think about all day so maybe he wants us think on him and how good he is. Without Jesus we are wretched and no good but through his blood we can enter into a relationship with the Father. Those are things I cannot wait for being in heaven being close to my son again who passed away enjoying the rest of my family at Jesus’ table. I’m trying to keep my thoughts on Jesus because he is worth it. Maybe this will help someone and maybe I can keep putting this into practice Thank you sweet Spirit if God and Sis Kesha for your obedience

  6. This is right on time. I’m leaving a toxic work environment and in the process of detoxing my thoughts so that I can be positive and think clearly as I prepare for the new place!!!:-)

  7. Father, I thank You for Your Holy Spirit that helps me as I submit to You. The over thinking is a problem and over eating as well. Thank You, for Your encouragement by using my sister how to feed me, counsel, teaching me to fight spiritually with You Word. Thank You, for answered prayer.
