Stay Right There

“I am the vine, and you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing.” John 15:5

I remember on a trip with my husband, I asked if a captain told you for the duration of the flight you have to stay in your seat no matter what, would you stay in your seat? He said, Yes, I would stay seated. I asked him why. He said because I want to follow the captain’s instructions for my own safety and the safety of everyone else on the plane.

Then I asked, what if you had an emergency and you had to use the restroom. Or, what if you had to throw up or something? He said, no, I would not stay seated. I said, but the captain had given specific instructions that everyone must remain seated, or they faced criminal penalties. Laughing, he said, I don’t care! I’m not using the restroom on myself on a plane. We both laughed, and I reiterated that the captain had given instructions and threatened prison for anyone who got out of their seat. Again, my husband responded, “I don’t care! If there’s an emergency, I will explain to the judge why I got up from my seat.” We both laughed again. Then I asked, what if God is the captain? He quickly responded, “Well, I will have to stay in my seat, no matter the emergency! God can clean me up if I have an accident. He can help my stomach. He can touch my digestive system and relieve whatever is trying to make me get up out of my seat.”

Whenever you fly on a commercial flight, if there’s turbulence ahead, you will see the fasten seatbelt sign go on, and you will hear the announcer say, attention all passengers, this is your captain speaking. We are experiencing turbulence, and we need everyone to please remain seated. Then, everyone proceeds to follow the instructions of the captain and fasten their seatbelts, remaining in their seats for their safety.

I can hear the Lord, who is our Captain, say to His daughters, “You are experiencing turbulence, and I need you to remain seated in Me. Everything is coming at you to get you out of faith, get you out of peace, get you out of joy, get you out of the Spirit, get you out of love, get you out of your place and your position in Me. But you are seated in heavenly places in Me. You are in My hands, and nothing can pluck you out. Nothing and no one. Stay right there in Me.”

My sister, God is your Captain, and He is making sure you land safely right in the middle of His will for your life. By God’s grace, you will see what the Lord wants you to see, go where He destined for you to go, and do all the Lord has called you to do by His Spirit and power. You possess a different spirit. You know God’s name and His character. You know He loves you, which is how you’re able to take courage and continue the fight. Your battles are strong, but your God proves stronger. Your trials are great, but your God proves greater. You are remaining in God, and He is remaining in you as your conquering King who fights for you and wins it all on your behalf. Choose to remain seated in Christ, and you will hear the Lord say, be still; you do not have to fight this battle, for the Lord your God will fight for you. Be not dismayed. Be not deflated. Be not disheartened. Stand firm and take heart, for today, you will see the salvation of the Lord. Those same enemies who came against you one way will flee from before you seven ways. They will not be able to conquer you because of the Lord who is with you. The Lord will reveal Himself to you in ways you’ve never seen.

My husband’s response told me that when it comes to staying in our seats, it matters who gave the command. How do we remain seated in these trying times? We remember that God is the one telling us to remain in Him. It is God instructing us through His written word, through the voice of the pastor or preacher, and by His Holy Spirit speaking to us. It is Him telling us to abide in Him. It is God telling us to stay in faith, obedience, and trust. It is the Lord telling us to stay in the Spirit and stay in love. God is issuing the order, our omnipotent Captain of our hearts, our heavenly Father, and with every command He issues to us, He gives us the power and the ability to do it.

  2. God knew I have been meditating on John 15:5. I just said, “ am I bearing fruit God? Because at the moment I don’t see any fruit.” Then I sat down to read your devotional and was amazed! Thank you for this excerpt… I don’t really have time to read another book, but I really would like to maybe this summer. I don’t have time it sounds like it’s a good one.

  5. I prayed and asked God to help me trust Him and believe in Him, and over time, I’ve come to know that I can truly trust Him. I no longer worry about tomorrow—I focus on today. I asked God to strengthen my faith, and reading this today reassures me that no matter what’s happening in my life, I trust Him, I believe in Him, and I love Him.

I go to bed with peace now. I don’t have sleepless nights where my mind races with worries. I know I’m growing in the Lord because I’ve never been so calm with my bank account down to $156. Instead of panicking, I trust Him completely. God’s got me, and I rest in that truth.

Thank You, Lord. Hallelujah! God is good, God is real, and I am blessed. It took me a long time to reach this place of trust and faith. I’m not perfect, but I believe in Him, and my mind no longer drifts into worry over how bills will be paid or what I might lose.

Thank You for this message, Lord. Hallelujah, thank You, Jesus. Amen! I’m excited about what God will do when you truly trust Him.
