Pay Your Debts and Live on the Rest

“Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest.” 2 Kings 4:7

When Elisha’s servant died, his widow came to Elisha. Her late husband’s creditor was coming after her, and since she didn’t have any money, they were threatening to take her two children to be slaves. So Elisha asked her what did she have in the house. She told him all she had was a jar of oil. Elisha then instructed her to go and borrow many empty vessels from her neighbors, and she and her children was to go home, close the door behind them, and pour into all the empty vessels. Well, miraculously God took her one jar of oil and multiplied it until all of the jars were full, and the oil stopped flowing! Then Elisha told her to do something I believe we all need to hear. He said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts, and you and your sons can live on the rest.”

Tax season has arrived and many are getting large lump sums of money. It would be wise to do the same thing Elisha told the widow woman. No matter how real the temptation may be, don’t waste the money God provides for you.

The widow woman came to Elisha with a need, and God provided the resources to meet her need, and enough to care for her and her children. You may have come to God with a pressing need. God is faithful to provide and will meet your every need, but it’s up to you to use what He provides for the very thing you prayed for.

Prayer: Father God, thank you for speaking directly to my heart. Help me to be a woman of honor and integrity. Help me to make wise choices when it comes to large lump sums of money you give me. Direct me Holy Spirit. Help me resist temptations to waste opportunities that come my way. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  1. Good stewardship is very hard…It’s taken my husband and I many years to walk in this. But God has slowly been teaching us. Ty DOTK for this right on word..trying to follow this principle of the Lord’s definitely helps us sleep better at night 😊Thank you Jesus β™‘

  2. Wow. Ever heard a sermon or read a devotion and felt like God was speaking Directly to You? My daughter and I both have the dotk devotional app and since she’s 2 hours ahead of me on the East Coast she often forwards it to me in case it’s not one of the ones I read that day. Thank you Anna!! Our family has always faithfully tithed on our gross income but our good stewardship stops there. We are Great at giving $$ away. I think as opposite as my husband and I are it’s the best most fun thing we do as a team. But we have always stunk at managing the $$ we have Left. Always spending more than we earn… always barely managing to bail ourselves out with the next bonus or raise etc. and then…Stupidly repeating the pattern Until he didn’t Get the bonus he expected last fall. Romans 8:28 is so right. I’ve seen many blessings and much good in the HARD MONTHS we’ve spent pulling together as a family to “slay the debt dragon” (title of a Great book on personal finances)
Finally! Help has arrived in the form of vested stocks and a bonus big enough to pay off all the debt and.. we are waiting for the Holy Spirit to tell us what to do with the tithe of that. Should be Fun!!!! I LOVE it when God lets us give away $$ in a way that directly helps someone. But I’ve already come up with and had my husband discard thankfully some not so good ideas about the $$. Thank you for this devotion. I feel like i just started rambling and never made the point about how profoundly God speaks to us all the time (if we’re listening) & how perfect The Word was for me in this moment. Oh Lord Jesus You Never cease to Amaze me at how MUCH You love me and each one of us. I hear people say “I am not worthy of..”. But that’s the whole point of Grace! We AREN’T worthy! None of us! AND THATS OKAY! Because You’ve got that covered LORD! Thank You! Ohh I Love You!!!! Forgive me for every dollar I’ve spent unwisely and lead our family from here continuing to learn new ways to be good stewards of what You’ve given us to manage. Thank You for how much fun my executive big oil πŸ™„ type husband has had clipping coupons. You love our Socks off And You have a sense of humor! Oh I am so so very glad I know You as my Lord and Redeemer!
