Give God the Broom

“Above all, love one another deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” 1 Peter 4:8

One day I went to visit a friend who suffers from a debilitating disease. When I walked into the home, I could smell a scent. I didn’t say anything, but just reached into my purse and mildly sprayed my perfume. As we sat in the living room, we talked and laughed. Then, she asked someone to bring her a broom to clean her rug, and she began to sweep while sitting in her chair. I watched as she swept over the same part of the rug and asked her to let me do it for her. She responded, no. After she saw that she couldn’t sweep the rug alone, I gently took the broom from her and finished sweeping.

You may not have a debilitating disease, but we are all suffering in our personal messes. But thank God, His Holy Spirit comes in and sits down with us, not mentioning anything of our sin. He fills our room with His sweet presence as His love covers and conceals our mess. Then, when we are ready to clean an area of our lives, He helps us accomplish the task. The Lord is gentle and patient with us. He knows everything about our struggles. Yet, He sits with us and does not humiliate or shame us. He even talks and laughs with us. He loves us and wants to help us. I pray we will let Him have the broom. I pray we let Him have our lives, our wounds, our failures, our traumas, and every part of our being. I pray we will let Him help us clean up our messes and clean up our lives. I pray we trust Him to do what we have not been able to do on our own.

Let’s Pray: Father, thank you for speaking to my heart. Thank you for loving me. Thank you that your Holy Spirit sits with me and fills my heart with your fragrance. There is some mess in me that I need help cleaning. I give you the broom, the dust pan, everything, and I receive your help. Help me learn to trust you more and more everyday with every part of my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
