There are people who have never experienced being drunk with alcohol. They don’t know what it feels like to be completely out of it, as though they’ve just been on a bad roller coaster. Although some people don’t know what alcohol intoxication feels like, everyone of us has experienced a different type of intoxication in our lives that’s just as terrible and even more dangerous. We all have experienced being completely wasted in our minds. When we allow ourselves to consistently think on negative thoughts, before long we are no longer our real selves. It’s as if every negative thought is a shot glass filled with toxic substance. After a while of consuming the negative thoughts, our words become toxic, our actions become toxic, and our behavior changes dramatically.
Some people have walked off their jobs, involved themselves in violence, abandoned their families, or left the church all in a state of intoxication in their minds. We drink thoughts that say, “They don’t like me”, “He doesn’t love me”, “I hate this job”, “I should have married someone else”, “She did that to me on purpose, I don’t like her”, or “I can’t do this.” My sister, if we sit and think on these negative thoughts, we are going to say something we regret and do something we will regret for the rest of our lives. It’s after we sober up that we realize the terrible consequences of our negative thinking.
Every action begins with a thought. Our life today is a direct result of our thinking yesterday. The Bible says cast down every vain imagination and bring into captivity every thought in the obedience of Christ (see 2 Corinthians 10:5). This is something we have to say out loud and do on purpose. Refuse anything toxic and untrue, and receive what God says is true and right. It’s time to sober up so we can live the life God designed for us to live!
Prayer: Father God, forgive me for all of the negative thinking I have allowed in my life. You gave me the mind of Christ. You gave me a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind. I receive by faith the sound mind you have already given me through Jesus and I cast down every vain imagination and take every thought captive. LORD, teach me how to stay sober in my mind when I’m at work, when I’m alone in my car, when I’m at home, when I’m with my husband, when I’m at church, and when I’m around my family. Help me to think on the right things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
