Just Be There

“To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn.” Isaiah 61:2

When Job lost everything, his three friends came to comfort and mourn with him. They sat with him silently for seven days and seven nights and didn’t say a word until after he was ready to open up. When his friends finally did speak, their words made Job’s suffering worst. They couldn’t believe God would allow such great calamity in someone’s life without a cause, and tried to say Job must’ve done something wrong. They couldn’t resist the urge to try to fix the problem. Finally, Job was so frustrated with his friends that he told them, Y’all are the worst comforters ever! If things were turned around and you were in my place, I would comfort you and strengthen you with my words. I would relieve your pain!

The greatest blessing to someone who is hurting and going through a difficult time right now is to have someone who is content with simply being there. They resist the urge to try to explain why it happened. They resist trying to fix the problem. They resist the urge to play God. They have already prayed to God about it and now they simply choose to just be there.

Prayer: Father, help my sister if she is hurting in some way. Help the people in her life be content with being there for her. Help them resist the urge to try to fix her problems or provide an answer. You alone are God. While you’re working things out in her favor, Father, help people in her life to be a good friend and be there. Help her do the same for others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

(Read Job 16:1-22; Psalms 34:18)

  2. I’m thankful I opened the app to see this because I found such friends at a new church. The Lord is helping me blossom in my new place and I praise him for working all things out for my good and His glory, and also then I’ll have an awesome story to tell my husband of all these Godly exploits when I see him in heaven. The peace I have now is from God. He is doing greater things in me!

    1. There was supposed to be β€œI found friends at a new church today. Thank you God there were women available to minister to me and comfort me.”

  3. Yes, May the Lord sent the right people at the right time to encourage them as well as they encourage me. It is often hard and discouraging to try to get through things on my own. Thank you so much for this timely devotional. Blessings, Shalom and Agape πŸ‘€πŸ™πŸ½β™₯οΈπŸ“–πŸ™ŒπŸ½
