Love and Honor Them

“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you” Exodus 20:12, ESV.

Growing up I watched how my mother took care of my grandfather for seven years. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and she took him into our home and cared for him until his last breath. You might think he was a great man for her to have honored him in this way. Actually he was quite physically abusive and mean when she was growing up, but he was still her father and she made it her business to care for him no matter what. Out of eleven siblings, she was the only one who stepped to the plate and honored him. Now she is blessed and the favor of God is all over her life. I truly believe it’s because of how she honored him.

How well you honor your mother and father is how well your children will honor you.

Just as your parents cared for you in your infancy and helpless state as a child, make an effort to care for your parents in their helpless state. Don’t throw them away. They may not deserve honor because of how they treated you, but they are still your parents and God expects you to love and honor them.

My mother had a background in nursing and she hired a home health aide to come in regularly. My grandfather had also retired from years of work at a steel company, so he wasn’t a financial strain. It was a perfect setup. However, your situation may be different. Ask the Lord how He wants you to care for your mother and father. Honor them and you will be blessed and the favor of the Lord will be on your life.

How well you honor your mother and father is how well your children will honor you.

Prayer: Father God, I thank you for speaking to my heart. Help me to honor my mother and father in a way that pleases you. Heal every wound that they’ve caused and give me the strength to do right by them. Thank you Lord for them. Bless me so that I can be a blessing to my mother and father. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  3. A man that I barely know shared with me today a story about his Father. He said he saw him once, when he was seven years old. As he grew up he was drinking alcohol with another man and the man said “you know you look like this guy..” And that’s the only way he found out who his dad was. Later his dad needed a job and this man was in operations management. He said he asked his mom should he help this man who was his father yet he didn’t know him. His mom said its your choice and went on to say “he didn’t do anything for you” he said he wasn’t bitter towards his father but wanted to please his mother. His father is now dead and he regrets the decision. LISTEN to your conscious or first mind as people say, We have all experienced that voice and I am 100% sure its the voice of Jesus Christ, who leads, guides and teaches us through the Holy Spirit sent by our Father in heaven. #asiministertoyouiministertomyself
