“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16
Many years ago I was in the car with a few of my friends and we were having a casual conversation. I had just been awarded something I had worked hard for, and she said, “There’s just something different about you, you’re like a light.” I remember smiling so deeply that my soul must have as well. I don’t remember if I even thanked her in that moment, but that was one of the best compliments I had received in my life. My friend didn’t compliment how I looked, what I said, or what I did. It wasn’t that I had worn the right shoes or did a favor for her, in fact she couldn’t even put her finger on what it was, just that I was different. I love that.
You and I were put on this earth for a reason. We are daughters of Christ, and we are to ensure that we have many, many neighbors in heaven. We are to make a difference. So what do we do to be different? Is it walking down the streets proclaiming scripture? What about attending every event and service the church has to offer? Maybe making donations or volunteering your time to local charities and missions? While all of these are more than wonderful, listen to what Jesus said: “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35). Loving one another; yes, it’s that simple.
Today, we live in a scary, frightful world with hate spread everywhere. There are shootings, hate crimes, violence, and disaster lurking every corner of the world we live in. People are spreading lies, and not truth. They are extending fists, and not a helping hand. Hate is being spread, instead of love. Though God calls us to be the salt and light of the earth. A light as though a “city set on a hill that cannot be hidden.”
As disciples of Christ, let us not grow weary in this world around us today to stand out and show people who Christ is. When people look toward you, they must notice, “There is something different about her.” Christ, the living Son of God, dwells within your heart. He shines from within and through you so you may captivate the hearts of others and lead them toward the same Savior that has saved you. That is how you lead hearts to Christ; by lettings other see His tangible love within you that leaves them wanting more. Remember, sister, “Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love” (1 Corinthians 13:13).
Prayer: Father, I thank you for your endless love, and being the very Father of Love. I ask You work in my heart and show me the loving paths to take. Help me to love like you, and use me as a vessel to show your love to others. In Your name, Amen.
