The Lord will fight for you as you hold your peace.

“And now, my lord, as surely as the Lord your God lives and as you live, since the Lord has kept you from bloodshed and from avenging yourself with your own hands, may your enemies and all who are intent on harming my lord be like Nabal” 1 Samuel 25:26, NIV.

As I read the story of Nabal and David, I’m reminded of the many times, past and present, I’ve been tempted to repay a wrong. Battles I have no business fighting. No wonder I return depleted after such ‘self-justification,’ my conscience tainted by needless engagement.

David was saved from a foolish deed by a wise woman, Abigail. She advised him to leave vengeance to the One who surely repays. David needn’t lift a finger. He listened and allowed the Lord to step in.

Whenever we step back from unfair treatment, we make room for God to step in. Whoever it is that’s eating and celebrating in your misery, whatever the taunts, mockery, and shame that still sting, the hurt that still lingers to this day, leave it to the Lord. For at the height of their rejoicing, the Lord will repay them in His way.

Prayer: Lord, please help me take a step back when I am tempted to go all out in justified anger. In your wisdom, Holy Spirit, help me remain calm amidst unjust provocation. Just as you were, Lord, on your journey to the Cross. In your most holy name, it is settled. Amen.

“For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge His people.”” Hebrews 10:30
