When God is Silent

“I have kept silent for a long time, I have kept still and restrained Myself. Now like a woman in labor I will groan, I will both gasp and pant.” Isaiah 42:14

When my children ask me for something, if I don’t say anything it’s because I’ve already answered them. Maybe they wanted a different response, so what they’ll do is continue asking me, hoping I will change and say something different. When I see that they’re not listening, I will stop talking altogether.

It is the same in our relationship with God. Maybe you’ve been asking God for His will regarding a matter. When God is silent it is because He’s already told you what He wants you to do. You can’t hear His voice because you are waiting for Him to approve your will, when He has already expressed His own.

When God is silent, ask yourself:

1. What has He already told me to do that I have not done?

2. Am I waiting for Him to change and say something different?

3. Am I listening with the intent to obey Him?

As you examine your heart and ask yourself these questions, the Holy Spirit will begin to minister to your heart and help you hear and obey what He’s telling you to do.

Prayer: Father God, I thank you for giving me understanding today. I know you haven’t left me. You’re always with me. Help me Lord to do what you told me to do and not try to change what you have spoken. I know you love me and you have my best in mind. Anything you’ve told me to do that I haven’t done, please forgive me. Give me a listening ear and a submissive heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

(Read Isaiah 42)
