“For the one who sows to his flesh [his sinful capacity, his worldliness, his disgraceful impulses] will reap from the flesh ruin and destruction, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life” Galatians 6:8, Amplified.
While visiting the bank one day, a teller made a mistake on my account. I didn’t realize the error was made until I tried to pay an important bill that was due and discovered the funds weren’t there. I returned to the bank, made the teller aware of the problem, and asked if the error could be fixed. She exclaimed that I would have to wait until the next day for anything to be done. Although I felt very frustrated, I immediately heard Holy Spirit say, “Sow mercy.” He made it clear how He wanted me to respond. So I decided to obey the Lord and told the teller, who was apologetic, “I understand. Mistakes happen all of the time, it’s a part of life.” She thanked me for being understanding because most of her clients aren’t.
In my life, I have sown to the flesh by doing what my flesh wants to do, saying what my flesh wants to say and responding in a way that doesn’t please God. No matter how justified I felt in my actions, nothing feels right when you know God’s not pleased. I have also sown to the Spirit by doing what God tells me to do, saying what God tells me to say and responding in the way He instructs me to even when I don’t want to. I can truly say, sowing to the Spirit feels so much better!
When we sow to the Spirit and obey the Lord, God promises that we will reap life as God has it. However, when we sow to our flesh by doing what our flesh wants to do, the Bible warns we will reap ruin and destruction. The decision is ours. Every action is a seed. Every word we speak from our lips is a seed. Every decision we make is a seed that will produce fruit in our lives, that affect not only us, but everyone around us and future generations to come. Always remember, you will reap from every seed you sow.
Prayer: Father God, thank You for ministering to my heart and teaching me how to sow to the Spirit and reap life. Forgive me for every fleshly seed I’ve sown whether through my words or actions. Help me to sow to the Spirit by obeying Your Word and the voice of Your Holy Spirit. I want to reap life that will bless my family and future generations after me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
